A triumph for a damn fine Australian gin! The West Winds Gin wins ‘best on premise spirit or liqueur’ at the 2013 Australian Liquor Industry Awards.
Taking the unique tack of blending traditional juniper with native Australian botanicals has proved a masterstroke for the four-man crew from The Tailor Made Spirits Company as their West Winds Gin triumphs at this year’s Australian Liquor Industry Awards.
The team set their course to victory, with two handcrafted gins – The West Winds The Cutlass and The Sabre. These two distinct gins blow conventional gins out of the water. Jez Spencer, Head of Sales, Booze and Buccaneering, explains:
“The pros said we couldn’t add tomato and we did. They also said we couldn’t add wattle seed and we did… they said we wouldn’t win any medals and we did. The Sabre at 40% is a fine clipper of a gin – its elegant lines and generous citrus notes will swiftly carry you to a place of sand, sun and sea, offering a crisp refresher at any time of the day.
Our Cutlass takes no prisoners. At 50%, it has the full rig – it’s not shy, it has a big savoury character and will bring out the pirate in any weekend sailor.
The West Winds Gins couldn’t be more Australian. Fresh, triple filtered rainwater from Margaret River, lemons and limes from Gingin (yes really, it’s a small farming town north of Perth), native Australian botanicals including bush tomato, wattle seed, cinnamon and lemon myrtle – are combined with other natural essentials at an artisanal distillery in Gidgegannup, Western Australia.
Yet The Sabre and The Cutlass would be lost at sea without a magic ingredient – the essence derived from the inveterate adventurism of the four gents who came together to form The Tailor Made Spirits Company – Jason, James, Jez and Paul. A mixologist, a wine marketer, a liquor guru and an engineer walk into a bar… the rest is history.
Previously, winners of gold, silver and double gold (twice) medals at the 2011 and 2013 San Francisco International Spirit Awards, The Sabre and The Cutlass have captured the attention of discerning gin lovers and bartenders internationally; these are truly the gins of choice for a quality G&T or a roaring, dirty (nae filthy) Martini.
