Sustainable cities are designed with consideration and care for social, economic and environmental impact. In addition to creating resilient habitat for existing populations without compromising the ability of future generations to experience the same.

QCollect’s handy locker boxes focus on the economic and environmental impact of sustainable cities, with the goal of making it easy and convenient to receive parcels and significantly reduce the cost of the last mile delivery.

Last-mile deliveries encompass any movement of freight/products between a distribution centre and the point at which the end consumer will receive it; essentially bridging the last mile of delivery from a transportation hub to the final destination in a home. The fundamental  issue is the inefficiencies in the delivery logistics when they are not done in bulk or batches.

Most delivery companies schedule a repeat delivery for the next working day after the first-failed attempt, and as a result a high percentage of second attempts also fail, compounding the effects of the initial failed delivery. After a second failed attempt non-delivered goods are usually held at the local depot, and ‘carded’ customers (those receiving a failed delivery slip through the letterbox) have to visit the depot in person to collect the item.

Failed deliveries are therefore uneconomical for a carrier. Redelivery has to be arranged mostly at the carrier’s expense and in addition it is a great inconvenience for the consumer to miss an important delivery, who then has to visit a depot or arrange for someone to be available to receive the parcel.

Freight vehicles represent a substantial traffic flow in urban areas attributing a large amount of CO2 emissions per van and the carbon intensity of any carrier company is large. Parking to make collections or deliveries often causes congestion and associated social problems with high traffic through pedestrian areas.

QCollect’s locker boxes significantly reduce the amount of CO2 emissions for any delivery van. It frees up space in our cities and it makes consumer life more convenient and handy.

The quality of life in Perth, or any city in Australia, is an important topic for us. We need to find ways to ensure less noise, less cars, and less pollution.  The QCollect project is a great example of how we are working towards improving air quality, congestion and providing convenient solutions to achieve a better quality of life. QCollect is destined to help influence cities and behaviour to adopt more efficient and sustainable practices.
