Nanusens develops integrated circuits with built-in nano-sensors. Its mission is to revolutionise the MEMS industry, transitioning from today’s artisanal manufacturing to an industry-standard. This will enable unprecedented levels of miniaturization, performance, low cost and volume production capability, enabling the massive deployment of IoT.

MEMS ICs have micron sized mechanical components inside. They are used to implement sensors and RF tunable devices, primarily targeting consumer applications such as smartphones, RFIDs and wearables. MEMS RF devices are needed for upcoming 5G smartphones operating at the higher bands of the spectrum.

MEMS ICs currently lack a manufacturing standard, but there is one for solid-state ICs, CMOS. By combining a simple and low-cost post-processing step with a series of unique patent-pending design methodologies, Nanusens has discovered a way to leverage the CMOS process to make MEMS devices. This allows Nanusens to benefit from the existing large economies of scale, leading to lower costs, smaller size and better performance.

Nanusens is building a patent portfolio by filing multiple patents on the design techniques they’ve been working on for years. The first one of these patents has now been approved for allowance. This is very good news for Nanusens, because it is a recognition of the uniqueness and performance of its designs. As a result, Nanusens will be able to prevent their competitors from using these design strategies.

In particular this first patent is US 17/145.014 with the title “MEMS DEVICE BUILT USING THE BEOL METAL LAYERS OF A SOLID STATE SEMICONDUCTOR PROCESS”. There are currently more patents being reviewed, as well as more patents being filed. As pioneers in the field of building MEMS in CMOS, Nanusens is protecting the required design techniques that are necessary to build a large number of sensors and RF devices, to deliver unique performance, small size and low cost, enabling high volume production capability. This is what the consumer electronics industry is demanding.
