Snapchat, Facebook Live, 360° Video, Instagram Stories, are all prominent examples of how video is taking the reins as the pre-eminent online marketing medium. By 2019, 80% of all consumer internet traffic will be video. In a sea of text-based information, video content provides welcome respite for the eyes and brain. Videos are shareable, engaging, and prone to reaching viral status, so why isn’t it a prominent force within one of the largest industries in Australia: real estate?

Entrepreneur Steve Makris spotted the gap in the market. With over 25 years of real estate industry experience under his belt, Steve along with his co-founder Isaac Suter, created Real Estate Tube in 2013, a service that utilises video to help Australians sell and rent properties. By merging video with real estate, he has created a new power couple to revolutionise the real estate landscape.

The online platform allows people to create and upload fun, engaging videos to attract an ideal house share or housemate. It is designed to help people make faster and better choices when it comes to selecting house share situations, create more engagement and help property listings stand out.

The housing industry is booming in Australia, currently worth a staggering $6.7 trillion. The rental market in particular is on the rise, with the number of first-home-buyers dropping 50% in the last 10 years. We’re fast coming a nation of renters, driven by a millennial crowd struggling to keep afloat in a cutthroat housing market. With ‘generation rent’ already so married to video content through social media streams, it seems unusual that video has yet to be integrated into the real estate industry.

The ‘aha’ moment for Steve came when he was showing properties to overseas buyers. “At the time I had a lot of overseas buyers looking to invest in Australia. I thought to myself that images really didn’t do the properties justice, didn’t allow potential buyers to see the size of the property and everything it entails. I also was looking for a solution to bypass language barriers. I decided to film the properties using my phone and email it to the buyers. Since that moment and our incorporation of real estate videos, the company has had such a positive response from the public that I knew we were onto something unique,” says Steve.

When looking at the way video is currently being utilised online, it seems a like an obvious move for the industry. Public figures use Snapchat and Instagram stories to personalise themselves and create intimacy with audiences. News outlets like The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal have jumped onto Facebook video to inform with higher engagement. We’re visual creatures – so much of our learning comes from depth, movement and sound. Whether stamping out horror housemates or demystifying how a property really looks, Real Estate Tube provides steadier footing to navigate the high stakes game of real estate.

Steve Makris has spent a large portion of his life becoming closely acquainted with the real estate industry. After working in various real estate agencies, Steve eventually owned his own brokerage firm. With Real Estate Tube, Steve wants to revolutionise the way people buy and rent. “The market is in dire need of a game-changer to come along and shake things up a bit. Usually the US exports ideas for us to use, but this is world first idea that is home-grown here in Australia. I want to change the industry not only at home but on a global scale.”
