Matching busy people who have a spare room with people on budgets needing one… great idea? Entrepreneur, Ludwina Dautovic, did just that- The Room Xchange is challenging Australia’s housing affordability crisis.
The Room Xchange, is Ludwina’s fifth tech investment that provides for a “way” of better living. Her latest business venture matches busy people or empty houses with travellers and independent youth. Basically, guests receive free accommodation in exchange for a couple of hours help around the house each day.
The idea came about when Ludwina’s daughter’s friend came to stay. Ludwina explains how she enjoyed help around the house and the company; and in-return her daughter’s friend enjoyed rent free accommodation in addition for doing a few chores like laundry, tidying up and groceries.
Ludwina soon realised that she had a new approach to the room-letting ecosystem that was different to what was already on offer like Airbnb. This sort of set up would suit many young people who cannot afford to get into the housing market or simply do not wish to lock themselves into a life of mortgage repayments. This arrangement is also great for people who work long hours, having someone help maintain the house also makes sense.
Its creating a better lifestyle for those who want this sort of accommodation…“The match-up we provide with The Room Xchange is fantastic and supports the living of life,” says Ludwina. She doesn’t agree with people who argue young people are shying away from fulltime work and home ownership because they’re lazy. “It’s inspirational the way young people are living today,” she says. “Why wait until you’re 50 to start living with passion? Having a 22 and a 24-year-old myself, I know that young people have good values around making money and the environment, their social values — they’re good, reliable people with great ideas.”
