KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Andhra Pradesh and German medical company Shivom.
  • The MoU will allow the Indian state to use the blockchain technology to establish a genome repository of its citizens that will provide better healthcare for them.

Shivom recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with and Andhra Pradesh that will allow the latter to make use of the blockchain technology for healthcare, specifically for DNA sequencing.

“Our partnership with Shivom explores the possibilities of providing an efficient way of diagnostic services to patients of Andhra Pradesh by maintaining the privacy of the individual data through blockchain technologies,” said J A Chowdary, IT Advisor to Chief Minister, Government
of Andhra Pradesh.

Andhra Pradesh is an Indian state known for being the first public entity to make use of blockchain in providing security for its land records as well as in ensuring cyber security. This time, it aims to make use of the technology a step further. If the agreement with Shivom becomes successful, the genome of more than 60 million residents will be on blockchain no later than 2025.

Shivom’s blockchain technology will make possible predictive medication in Andhra Pradesh. This means reducing complications and increasing the chancing of finding a cure for illnesses.

Shivom is expected to use the blockchain to create a genomics ecosystem. The data analytics as well as the apps and services will then be opened to healthcare providers in the market. Shivom is a medical company that connects clinical laboratories, researchers and patients through the use of blockchain technology.

“Whilst diversity is all around us in the physical world, it is still lacking in the existing genomic data available to researchers around the world. This results in exclusion, as minority and under-represented groups miss out on the benefits from advances in predictive and personalised medicine because abnormal genomic variations that exist in their ethnic or geographical location will not be present in the data that researchers are working with,” Shivom CEO Dr. Axel Schumacher said.

Schumacher said the agreement with Andhra Pradesh is significant for the company given its passion about changing the status quo in healthcare. The company considers the MoU the first step in providing more accessible healthcare.
