TurbAero is developing revolutionary turbine engines for markets worth $2bn and forecast to double over the next 5 years

When the smartphone was launched, it led a revolution in mobile technology.

Turbine Aeronautics (TurbAero) is leading a similar revolution in engines for the light aircraft (Aviation) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) markets, while also establishing a unique business model for the sub-250kw electric power generation market.

With existing markets exceeding $2bn, and the UAV and electric power generation markets in high growth rate sectors, an exciting opportunity exists for TurbAero’s disruptive technology and business model.

Problem

In Aviation and UAV markets, there are currently no sub-300hp turbine engines that are both commercially available and competitive with incumbent piston engines.

The current market leaders use products that are based on 70 year-old piston technology.

In the electric power generation market, significant verticals are not being adequately serviced by incumbent suppliers, and limited opportunities for licensing of technology exist.

Market Size

TurbAero is targeting an addressable market of about $2bn per annum, which is high growth and is forecast to at least double over the next five to seven years.

The company is pursuing three significant verticals, offering diversity from a niche or concentration risk perspective. The launch Aviation market is large but mature, and TurbAero technology could dominate the sector and replace incumbent technology. The remaining two verticals (UAV’s and electric power generation) are in high growth sectors.

Opportunity/Positioning

TurbAero’s markets are the sub-300hp market in Aviation/UAV’s and sub-250kw in electric power generation.

TurbAero will provide new and disruptive technology in Aviation by offering a superior engine option to existing piston engine options. Turbines were adopted in >300hp aircraft market 60 years ago with a well proven value proposition.

In the electric power generation markets, both the technology and the unique customer driven business model are disruptive in this market.

Team

The founders and current board members are brothers Dave & Andrew Limmer. Together, they have a rare combination of extensive aviation and technical experience (Dave Limmer – CEO) and strong business experience from both a start-up and blue-chip corporate perspective (Andrew Limmer – Chairman).

The business has a world class, highly experienced technical development team led by a CTO who has an extensive career in turbo-machinery design and development.

The board is supported by a strong independent Advisory Board.

Competitive Advantage

  • First mover to successfully introduce turbine technology to sub-300hp Aviation market
  • Development and ownership of key innovative IP
  • Innovative and scalable global business model
  • Diversity of revenue stream and risk from multiple verticals in different industries
  • Fast decision making and ability to pivot quickly compared with large corporates
  • Ability to react quickly and capture significant niche market opportunities

Exit Strategy

The company intends to have partial exits at growth investment rounds. The ultimate exit is expected to come via:

  • A trade sale to incumbent technology providers or to other industry participants; or
  • An IPO to provide liquidity and assist in further international growth
